Judy Scorer

Judy has over thirty years of experience as an English teacher, consultant and adviser at primary level. She is an experienced KS2 SATs marker and Team Leader, and is an STA approved moderator for end of key stage 1 and 2 reading and writing assessment. She holds a BA honours degree in English from Sheffield University, a PGCE and the NPQH.

During Judy’s teaching career, she developed innovative and exciting approaches to literacy teaching and was one of the first Leading Literacy Teachers in her local area.

Judy worked as a Literacy Strategy Consultant for three years before becoming Primary English Adviser in Cheshire in 2003, a position she held until 2011 when she established Literacy First alongside Jonathon Riley.

Working closely with pupils and teachers across the primary phase, Judy has led very successful projects in a variety of areas, from inspiring reluctant writers to the effective use of whole texts to support purposeful reading and writing. She has also written many units of work based on quality texts to support the delivery of primary curriculum objectives.

Over the years, Judy’s work has earned an excellent reputation; her training and literacy expertise has always been highly valued by all those who have worked with her.

Jonathon Riley

Jonathon Riley, Director of Literacy First, inspires teachers through an interactive approach to the teaching of English.

He is an approved Standards and Testing Agency (STA) moderator for both key stage 1 and key stage 2. He is a strategic lead moderator for Cheshire East and he understands the importance of making accurate teacher assessment judgements against national standards.

Jonathon has worked as a Literacy Consultant in Cheshire during which time he inspired colleagues and helped to raise standards. He became the lead consultant for the Every Child a Writer programme, working with ten leading teachers to support colleagues in Years 3 and 4. This successful programme used a three tier approach to help raise standards in writing.

Earlier in his career, he was accredited as an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST). During five years in this role he demonstrated teaching techniques to visiting practitioners in order to help them accelerate progress and raise attainment.
